Rex Reports for Duty - New K9 Officer Enhances Campus Safety at Calhoun County ISD

Posted Date: 03/05/26 (09:13 AM)

Calhoun County Independent School District is proud to announce the addition of K9 Rex to the district’s police department. Specializing in narcotics detection, Rex will serve alongside his handler, Lieutenant James Monroy, to further strengthen campus safety efforts across the district.

K9 Rex is a 2.5 year old Belgian Shepherd from Poland who is trained and certified to assist in proactive safety operations. The K9 team will conduct routine campus walkthroughs, assist with investigations, and support preventative measures designed to maintain a safe, drug-free learning environment for students and staff.
“Our commitment to student safety remains our highest priority,” said Evan Cardwell, Superintendent of Calhoun County Independent School District. “I appreciate our board of trustees, Chief Klare, Lieutenant Monroy, and everyone who has played a role in establishing our in-house K9 program.”

Lieutenant Monroy brings prior K9 handling experience to the role, having previously worked with a K9 partner in another law enforcement capacity. That background provides valuable expertise in training reinforcement, operational deployment, and community engagement. Together, Lieutenant Monroy and Rex form a skilled team committed to supporting student well-being and campus security.

In addition to safety operations, Rex and Lieutenant Monroy will participate in educational outreach opportunities and demonstrations, for example visiting elementary students. These engagements are designed to help students better understand the important role K9 units play in law enforcement and school safety.
