Calhoun County ISD discussed results of their Texas Academic Performance Report (TAPR) during a public hearing at the March 7 school board meeting. The report reflected important information about how Calhoun County ISD students performed in 2021, compared to 2019, as the STAAR test was not administered in the spring of 2020. The report also compared district performance against state and region averages.

Highlights for the district include strong performance from elementary students, with all tested subjects scoring above state and region percentages in all performance categories. Algebra 1, Biology, and U.S. History scores were above state and region averages in the approaches and meets performance categories. Another highlight for the district was from the emergent bilingual population, who performed above state and region percentages in math and science.

The district continues to focus on improving student performance in the areas of Reading, Math, and Social Studies at the middle school level, as well as English 1 and English 2 at the high school level.

Public school districts across the state, including Calhoun County ISD, were not given a formal accountability rating in this year’s report, due to a declaration of disaster related to the pandemic.

In other business, board members also:

  • Renewed teacher contracts for the 2022-2023 year, and approved an additional safe return employee stipend to be given at the conclusion of the 2021-2022 school year.
  • Approved an optional 20% homestead exemption for all qualified homeowners, along with an optional $10,000 exemption for homeowners 65 and over, and an optional $10,000 exemption for homeowners who qualify as disabled. These exemptions have been recommended annually by the Calhoun County ISD Board of Trustees since 1984.
  • Heard a report on delinquent property tax collections, including a statistic that the district has collected 99.92% to 100.73% of the taxes levied during each of the last four fiscal years.
  • Authorized budget funding and a proposal to expand middle school athletic offerings next school year. The programs discussed in this proposal include baseball, softball, and soccer.
  • Discussed an expansion of the Calhoun High School Agricultural Program, and reviewed preliminary site plans and facility design.
  • Adopted the 2022-2023 district instructional calendar, as recommended by administration. The adopted calendar received the majority of votes from staff and is similar to the 2021-2022 calendar.
  • Adopted a notice of election for the board of trustee election on May 7, 2022, including polling locations, and set date to canvass election results. There are two board member positions up for election.
  • Recognized the new Calhoun High School Mariachi Band and enjoyed two songs that were performed.
