On Thursday, March 5, 2015, the Travis Middle School Advanced and Intermediate

Bands traveled to Victoria West High School to compete in the UIL Music Region

14 Concert and Sight-Reading Contest. The Intermediate Band received a rating

of Excellent on their prepared music and a rating of Superior in sight-reading. The

Advanced Band received Superior ratings from all six judges, thus winning the second

Sweepstakes Award in a row, and the sixth Sweepstakes in the last ten years.

“Our students worked very hard to remain eligible for this contest, and worked very

hard on their music and sight-reading skills. All their fine efforts certainly paid off,”

said Doug Hamelwright, Travis Middle School Head Band Director. “Our community

provides great support for us, and we are very appreciative. Our directing staff, private

lessons teachers, parents, school administration,CCISD teachers and support staff all

share in the success of our program.”

The Travis Intermediate Band, directed by David Sprinkle, performed “Atlantis” by

Anne McGinty, “Fire Dance” by Douglas Akey, and “Spitfire” by Michael Story in the

concert contest while the Advanced Band performed “Australian Folk Fantasy” by Mark

William, “Cumberland Cross” by Carl Strommen and “Miracle at Dunkirk” by John

Edmonson. The sight-reading pieces were works commissioned by UIL for the sight-
reading contest.

“I always feel that the sight-reading contest is an excellent indicator of what the students

know about music,” said Mr. Sprinkle. “After only seven minutes of looking over a piece

they’ve never seen, students are expected to provide a polished performance, including

notes, rhythms, tuning, dynamics, and all the other aspects of music making. It is a

contest of concentration and applying what students know.”

The Travis Bands will next compete in the Music Region 13 solo and ensemble contest

on April 11, 2015 at Patti Welder Middle School in Victoria. The Travis Bands will be in

concert at the Calhoun High School Auditorium on Tuesday, May 19, 2015.
