The 2015 Breaker yearbook, “Changing Tides,” has been recognized for excellence and featured in the 2016 Jostens Look Book, celebrating the best-of-the-best in yearbook design and coverage. The Jostens Look Book is a collection of spreads and photos from outstanding yearbooks and their creative themes, cool covers, dazzling designs, relevant coverage, storytelling copy and action-packed photography. Along with design excellence, the annually published Look Book honors the important role well-crafted yearbooks play in helping schools chronicle the experiences, stories and achievements most relevant to students and that academic year.

The 2015 Breaker was created by LeeAhn Villarreal, Alexa Moreno, Destiney Ybarra, Emily Foester, Kyrsten Carreon, Haley Morales, Devin Albrecht, Asia Reparato, Jessica Perez, Andrie Castillo, Kendall Dodson, Amberlee Wright, and Camree Crober under the direction of Amanda Bird, Calhoun High School yearbook adviser.

“I am incredibly proud to have the cover of last year’s Breaker featured in the Look Book. Our design, our creativity will now inspire other yearbook staffs.  This is my sixth year as adviser, and each year the staff improves and the book gets increasingly better. It is a privilege to work and lead this talented group of students,” said Amanda Bird, Breaker yearbook adviser.

The CHS Breaker was one of only 494 yearbooks selected from approximately 3,000. The 2016 panel of judges, comprised of nationally recognized scholastic journalism professionals and award-winning yearbook advisers, selected the best examples of yearbook spreads and covers to make up the 320-page 2016 Look Book.

“Yearbooks are unique, limited edition books created by students to capture the stories and events for all of the school’s students and Jostens is proud to celebrate the yearbook tradition and the 494 yearbooks selected for the 2016 Jostens Look Book, said Gary Lundgren, editor. “Today’s yearbooks are very sophisticated in terms of visual presentation and the relevant and inclusive content that is featured.”

Amanda Bird and her yearbook staff received a copy of the 2016 Jostens Look Book and certificate from Jostens to recognize their outstanding achievement.

The Jostens Look Book is a must-have resource for yearbook advisers and staffs seeking creative design and coverage ideas, trends and inspiration. The Look Book complements and, Jostens online destinations for yearbook creation ideas.

About Calhoun High School Breaker

The Breaker is currently in its 83rd year of production.  The sizes and formats have changed over the years, but the goal remains, to cover the school year as accurately, comprehensively, and creatively as possible.  Currently, the book is 200 pages with a 20 page extended spring edition, which includes activities occurring from March through graduation. Students receive the hardback yearbook in May during a distribution and signing party; the spring edition arrives in the mail mid-July.  In addition to yearbook sales, the staff relies on advertising sales and fundraising efforts to meet their budget requirements.  Yearbook production is a true 21st century class in that students learn writing, design, technology, teamwork, story-telling, project management, marketing and sales, and budgeting.  Yearbook develops skills that last a lifetime.

Last year’s theme, “Changing Tides”, was developed from the idea that CHS was facing many changes during the 2014-15 school year: new staff, new bell schedule, new football, soccer, & baseball fields, new school policies regarding electronics in the classroom, and a more relaxed dress code for students. The yearbook staff chose to embrace these changes and highlight them throughout the yearbook. The result was a tribute to our ability to adapt, Breaker 2015: “Changing Tides.” Like the tides in our bay, we roll with the changes.
