Calhoun County ISD is hosting a special presentation featuring Original Freedom Writer Manny Scott to inspire a message of hope for parents and community members who work with the youth of Calhoun County. The presentation, which is free and open to the public, is scheduled for Monday, February 15, at 6:30 p.m., at the Calhoun High School Library at 201 Sandcrab Blvd in Port Lavaca.

“Anyone who plays a role in reaching the youth of Calhoun County is encouraged to participate in this presentation,” said Calhoun County ISD Superintendent Dr. James Cowley. “Mr. Scott’s message of helping others make the most out of our lives has the potential to turn a life around from despair to hope, and from mediocrity to excellence.”

Manny Scott’s personal story about his rise from a gang and drug-infested neighborhood in Long Beach is portrayed in the MTV Movie “Freedom Writers,” starring Hilary Swank. In the movie, Scott is represented, in part, through the character of “Marcus” along with other students. Since the film’s release, Scott’s authentic and inspiring message has galvanized almost one million people worldwide.

Scott describes his life at fourteen, “I dropped out of high school. I was sitting on a park bench. Helpless, hurting and hopeless, I was thinking about doing something that would have gotten me incarcerated or killed. The ending of my story seemed certain.”

Scott adds, “But a total stranger sat down next to me, and inspired me to take a path in life down which very few people travel. From that moment, I began writing a new chapter in my life. And that has made all the difference.”

Calhoun County ISD is hosting additional presentations to inspire staff and students.
