The stage is set for the Calhoun County District Spelling Bee Competition!

Twenty-three students will demonstrate their remarkable spelling skills on Thursday, February 9 at the Calhoun High School Auditorium. Two co-champions will be recognized, and these two spellers will represent Calhoun County at the 28th Regional Spelling Bee in Victoria on March 21. The Regional Spelling Bee Champion qualifies for participation in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

HJM Elementary will be represented by Olivia Chen, Doreen Luo, Faryn Redd, Ray Adam Valadez, Tammy Zhang and Cody Kemper (alternate). The spellers for JR Elementary will be Johnie Bird, Gavin Chavez, Rebekah Garcia, Talyiah Hosey, Mario Vargas, and Makenna Dunagan (alternate). Spelling for Port O’Connor School will be McKenna Guevara, Alexandra Mallory and Annabelle Thurman (alternate). Representing Seadrift School will be Maci Bryan, Briley Christensen, Jayda Nguyen, and Jessie Lashley (alternate). The Travis Middle School spellers include Cesar Blanco, William Boehl, Gigi Cheng, Anne Liu, Jeffrey Liu, and Heaven Martin (alternate).  Spelling for Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic School will be Madelyn Crawford, Abigail Holford, Stella Motl, and Arianna Silvas (alternate). 

Since its inception 89 years ago, the purpose of the Scripps National Spelling Bee program is to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabulary, learn concepts, and develop correct English usage.
